A recent Harvard CAPS/Harris poll of 1,999 registered voters found that 71 percent support the SAVE America Act.
From where I stand, this proposed legislation is eerily similar to S.A. Apartheid policy, to effectively suppress voting rigjts for melanated and low income citizens.
Potential consequences:
* A woman who changed her last name upon marriage may be prohibited from registering to vote because her birth certificate shows a different name than her ID
* A student who used to register online in their home state would now be forced to travel to an election official in person to show a passport, likely resulting in them not registering.
* An elderly voter with no birth certificate or passport, who has voted for decades, could be denied registration.
* County election offices, already facing high turnover, could be forced to shut down voter registration drives due to the high costs and logistical nightmares.
These guys are playing chess and we're still playing checkers.
What then must we prepare to do?
African Americans will need to amp up our game and stay a step ahead. Stay informed and prepared, not alarmed, on this proposed legislation.
