Rev. 6/2/2026 Banking culture and kinship is normal. People often choose banking relationships based on trust. That trust is frequently strengthened when leadership reflects their culture, community, values, faith, or shared experiences. Virtually every prosperous community intentionally supports its own financial institutions before its dollars circulate into the broader economy. African Americans began building that tradition after Emancipation, but those efforts were disrupted during the end of Reconstruction by forces that feared the combined influence of Black economic and political power. Today, some still fear the growing influence of Black banking. They are fighting the wrong battle. When African Americans prosper, America prospers. The greatest obstacle to revitalizing Black economic strength is not external opposition alone—it is often our own mindset.
