10 Tips to Have a 1st Family Meeting about Preparedness and Life Transition Topics

10 Tips to Have a 1st Family Meeting about Preparedness and Life Transition Topics

1. Start with love, not fear.
“I want us prepared because I love this family.”

2. Use Memorial Day as the opening.“Since we’re remembering legacy, let’s talk about protecting ours.”

Post-Memorial Day, use any national holiday to open with "Family is so important. That's why we're here today. Let's talk about protecting ours...let's talk about preparedness."

3. Keep the first conversation short.
Aim for 15–20 minutes, not a full family summit.

4. Begin with general preparedness, such as documents and information we should have on hand at all times.
Start with emergency contacts, documents, insurance, medications, and communication plans.

Expect youngsters by age 13, to have their identity information on hand also...at all times!

5. Ask, don’t lecture.

“If something happened, would we know where your important papers are?”

6. Make it adults-only for sensitive topics.
Wills, living wills, power of attorney, and final wishes should be discussed among adults first.

7. Create a no-blame, no-shame tone.
The goal is progress, not exposing who is unprepared.

8. Use “wellth” language.

Explain that preparedness protects the wellbeing, peace, dignity, and stability of the whole family.

9. Avoid controversy in the first meeting.
If family tensions exist, keep it general until trust is stronger.

10. End with one small action.
Ask each adult to locate one important document before the next family check-in.

Bonus:

Reality check. While there is no perfect preparedness plan, a strong family faith foundation is the most priceless preparedness asset one can have. Begin and/or end every preparedness meeting with a prayer, such as...

Dear Lord,

Guide our hearts and minds as we gather to prepare with wisdom, faith, and love. Help us protect our families, strengthen our communities, and use every resource with stewardship and compassion. May our planning bring peace, not fear, and may our work honor You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen
